Overlooking the mighty Mississippi River is Onalaska, a city of 17,700 people. Onalaska is known as the “Sunfish Capital of the World” and has a 15 foot tall Sunfish named Sunny who is the ambassador of Onalaska.

The city is a great place for avid birdwatchers. The Upper Mississippi Wildlife Refuge is a 200,000 acre refuge that has seen the likes of 284 different species of birds. Some common birds on the refuge are Bald Eagles, Tundra Swans, and Pelicans. The town is also situated on the Great River State Trail. This trail offers over 100 miles of connected bike trails for those who want to get out and explore the area on two wheels.

The Omnicenter is a host to a wide range of events throughout the year in Onalaska. The Omnicenter is home to many local hockey teams including the Onalaska Boys & Girls teams, the Tri-State Toe Picks, and Avalanche Hockey. In addition to ice sports, the Omnicenter hosts other types of events such as banquets, trade shows, and job fairs.

The food junkie will have no problem finding some incredible food in the area. Onalaska offers everything from fine dining to exquisite local eats and even some foreign flavors. One of the local staples in this area is the Blue Moon Restaurant. Not to be confused with the beer, this local favorite has been a famous landmark on Highway 35 for almost 100 years.
